It’s already known that we’re experts on all things skirting board and architrave… But did you know that we are also experts in wall panelling?
We’re used to answering all your wall panelling related questions, and thought it would be helpful to answer a bunch of them in this guide.
Wall panelling is becoming increasingly popular. It’s a sure-fire way to add some class and character to any space in your home, for little expense and effort. While many opt to get the professionals in to measure up, build and install, there is no reason why you can’t give it a go yourself, especially if you’re a keen DIYer.
Though it’s a relatively simple process, getting it wrong could be pretty disastrous, and even damage your walls. So before you get started, read this guide to learn all the tips to wall panelling. From choosing the right type of panelling to measuring and cutting it to size, we’ll answer all your questions to help you give your home an easy panelling makeover.
Planning Your Wall Panelling Project
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail – a quote that is absolutely true when it comes to wall panelling. It’s virtually impossible to panel your walls without having a plan, so here are all the things you should consider:
Determine the Design and Layout
There are many ways you can position your wall panelling, from half-way to full length, horizontally or vertically. Some people prefer large panels, while others like slim panelling, or a combination of both.
If you have light fittings or a media wall, consider how you’d like the panelling to accommodate or border these areas.
If you struggle to vision this kind of thing, platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram, or home decor magazines can inspire some really creative and practical ideas. Decorative wood panels are starting to trend, offering some art to a room with bordered panelling.
Once you’ve mapped out your panelling, it’s time to get the calculations to solidify your ideas.
How To Measure and Calculate Wall Panelling
A tape measure, spirit level, or laser level will help you pinpoint measurements accurately –and accuracy is key here.
To calculate the material needed for wall panelling, you’ll need to measure the length and height of the wall and multiply the two numbers – this will give you the square footage. Then, divide the square footage by the size of the panels to determine how many panels you will need.
I’d always recommend adding extra panels to account for any mistakes or waste, so that you don’t end up with an unfinished job.
If you don’t feel confident with this, especially if you had a more complex design in mind, you can always contact our experts who will guide you through it.
Materials and Tools – What You Need
Got your design in place and your measurements noted? Here’s a list of other items and materials you’ll need for this DIY job:
Wall Panelling Tools
- Saw: You’ll definitely need one of these – either a mitre or circular saw – to cut the panelling to the right size.
- Instant Grab Adhesive: To easily attach the panelling to the wall securely.
- Hammer or Nail Gun: For attaching the panelling to the wall if you don’t want to use adhesive. A nail gun will make life so much easier.
- Drill: To make holes in the panelling for electrical outlets and switches.
- MDF Primer or Wood Primer: This prepares the surface of the panelling for painting. (Although our panelling is already primed.)
- Sandpaper and Electric Sander: To smooth out the surface of the panelling. I always opt for sandpaper by hand.
- Paint: The finishing touch. Always test colours first, as it will be very difficult to change afterwards.
- Filler and Caulk: These seal the gaps between the panelling and the wall.
All these tools are regulars in most shed and garages, or can be easily purchased from DIY stores.
Wall Panelling Materials
There are different types of materials you can use for panelling, including MDF, wood, or PVC. MDF is affordable and very easy to work with, which is why it’s such a popular choice. You can get it in different styles to suit your taste, and it’s easy to resize.
At Skirting King, we have MDF panelling that is high quality and water resistant, and it’s even readily-primed, making it a lot easier for you to install.
Preparing the Walls for Panelling
We’re nearly there! Before we get to the exciting part, prepping the walls is an absolute must, as it ensures the panelling has the best possible chance of fixing onto the wall flush and firm, for the long term.
Clean and Level the Surface
Start by thoroughly cleaning the walls to remove any dust, dirt, and grease – you’ll be surprised how much comes off! For this you should use a mild detergent in warm water.
Once you’ve done this and the walls are clean and dry, you need to make sure there are no lumps, bumps, or roughness that could cause problems when fixing your panelling. If you find any, use a sanding block to smooth them down until they’re nice and level.
And while we’re on the subject of levelling, check that the walls are straight with a spirit level. If you find an area that is unlevel, mark it – you’ll need to plaster it and add filler to even it out.
Wait for the filler to dry completely, sand it down for a smooth finish, and check it one more time to ensure the walls are now level and ready to be panelled.
Apply Primer and Marking Guidelines
Once the walls are clean and level, apply a coat of primer evenly with a roller or brush, and allow it to fully dry – this will help the panelling adhere properly.
Next, mark up where you need your panelling to be fixed, using a measuring tape to ensure all heights and widths are correct. You can use a spirit level to check your panel markings are straight and aligned to each other.
Finally, you’re good to go!
Installing the Wall Panelling
Cut the Panels To Size
With a saw, cut the panels to size. You should be familiar with your panel measurements at this point, and many of the same lengths will be repeated – so hopefully this should be a relatively easy task.
Fix the Panels
This is where you need a steady hand and patience. A top tip is to start at the top of the wall and work your way down, using a spirit level as you go. Carefully apply the adhesive, and fix each panel firmly into place.
Repeat, until all the panels are in place. The golden rule is to take your time – this isn’t a job you can rush.
Fill Gaps and Sand Down
To secure the panelling to the walls and protect them from movement, you’ll need to seal the gaps around each panel. Use the caulk or filler for this, ideally one that matches the colour of your wall panels. Use a caulking gun or putty knife to apply it, and smooth it out with your finger.
Once the caulk or filler is completely dry, smooth the surfaces ready for the paint to go on. A coarse grit sandpaper will do a great job, followed with fine grit sandpaper to finish. To avoid any damage, always sand in the same direction as the wood grain.
Paint
For the finishing touch, it’s time to add the paint and bring all your hard work to life! Eggshell or satin finishes are popular choices for wall panelling, but you can also opt for a rustic finish or decorative wall panels for a unique look.
You’ll need a couple of layers of thin, even coats of paint. After you’ve painted the first later on, wait for it to dry completely before you apply the second.
At last, you can step back and admire your craftsmanship. By following these steps, you’ve panelled your own walls in the most cost-effective way, and added a touch of luxury to your home.
