Window boards – also known as window sills – can give any window that perfect frame and functionality. But do you know which material is best for window boards, and in what design?

Before you go choosing any old thing (or worse, the wrong thing), read this quick guide. We’ll help you decide on the type of window board you need including material and size, plus we’ll give you some guidance and tips on measuring up and installing them, as well as some info on the most popular window board profiles today.

Why Do We Need a Window Board?

Some of us call them window boards, while others refer to them as window sills. They’re both the same thing – the flat board or ledge that seats nicely at the bottom of your window.

Most of us see them as something merely aesthetically pleasing – a place to add some finishing touches and belongings, with the backdrop of outside surroundings. But actually, window boards serve an important purpose – they support the weight of the window, and also stop water from entering your home.

You can buy window boards in various materials, all of which will serve the same function. Choosing the right one comes down to how you want to your window sills to look. And though they serve an important purpose, we want them to look beautiful, and in tune with the rest of our décor.

Choosing the Right Window Board

We’ve established that window boards are functional as well as a styling opportunity. Practicality does come first, so the first consideration should always be material.

Our most recommended and indeed most popular is a window board made from moisture-resistant MDF – a material that reduces damp, and therefore helps prevent warping or damage.

With material sorted, you’ll then need to choose the right size. There isn’t much wriggle room with this, as it will pivot on the measurements of your window (we’ll show you how to take these in a moment). There is also a variation of profiles you can choose from – from simple, sleek designs that blend seamlessly into the board, to more ornate styles that will add a decorative addition to your window.

Consider the style of the rest of the room, too – what style skirting and architrave do you have? Choose lines and level of softness based on how well they’ll accompany other features. You’ll also need to think of practicality – do you need the board to be slim to allow for other furniture around the window? Or would you like the space to be broad and proud, presenting large ornate accessories?

Measurements aside, a lot of choosing the right window board comes down to your choice of style, budget, and practical needs. Taking the time to think about all these factors and choosing a high-quality, moisture-resistant board will ensure that your window boards are presented beautifully and practically for years.

Measuring Your Window Boards

The most obvious step here is to measure the size of your window. Note down its width and height, and then confirm how far out you want the overhanging lip to go. From experience, this is usually between 20mm and 30mm. We also recommend a thickness of around 30mm.

As any DIY fanatic will know, we can’t afford any errors on this. If you’re not feeling quite so confident about measuring, get a professional to help (always seek a number of quotes and check credentials first).

Once they’re installed, you’ll need a satin topcoat for the best finish. There’s no need to worry about this part if you’re purchasing from Skirting King, as we offer pre-primed and pre-painted satin-finished window boards that are less than 250mm wide. But if you’re doing it yourself, satin topcoat will be best.

Installation Tips

Some of our customers like to install their own window boards, especially if they’re keen DIYers and have done it before. If you’re going to install your own, here are our top installation tips we’ve learned over the years:

Preparation Is Essential

Always, always, put effort into your preparation by making sure you have all the necessary tools and materials before you start. Taking time to accurately measure the dimensions and double-check your calculations will also give you a much easier time when it comes to installation. The more accurate the measurements, the smoother the fit.

Ensure It Is Level and Secure

Your window board must be level. When you’re installing, have your trusty spirit level to hand to make sure it is dead straight before you set it. Securing the window board firmly in place is also essential – don’t scrimp on time or money here, and always use appropriate screws or nails.

Spend Time On Finishing Touches

A less stressful tip here – the fun part! To bring out the best in your window boards, soften the edges and any imperfections or roughness with sandpaper, before applying a stain or paint colour that perfectly complements the room and window frame.

Look After Them

Remember that you need to look after your window boards if you want them to remain protected and looking good for years to come. Regular maintenance is especially important for wooden window boards.
